Advanced Printmaking
Sample Syllabus
Instructor: Brian Hutchinson
Class Objectives:
1.The students will perform full color reduction Relief and Serigraphy printing in the production of a fine art hand pulled edition.
2.The students will explore the print work of historically significant artists in order to make connections between contemporary
practices and historical trends.
3.The students will perform single run monotype printing as well as full color reduction monotype printing in the production of fine
art artist proofs.
4.The students will perform intaglio and relief application in the creation of a fine art hand pulled edition employing single and
multiple matrices.
5.The students will perform etching techniques using a copper plate in the creation of a fine art hand pulled edition involving single
plates and multiple run projects.
6.The students will perform plate or stone lithography drawing and wash techniques and employ etching procedures necessary for
proper printing.
7.The students will explore contemporary Printmaking artists in order to create meaningful connections with historical print methods
and current trends in printmaking.
8.The students will apply proper nomenclature practices and be able to identify nomenclature features and their significance to the
edition.
9.The students will prepare and manage a complete portfolio of print work amassed during Advanced Printmaking.
10.The students will engage in critical practice and theory in the following manners: individual consultation with instructor, written
defense, and group-critique centered on applying critical vernacular, and informal peer critique.
Expectations:
Students should show up to every class on time as demonstrations and pertinent lectures are delivered at the beginning of each class. Students are expected to maintain regular attendance during class and invest time outside class in the print studio. Students are expected to take full advantage of the provisions in the studio in a safe and orderly manner. Good studio habits expected of the student include: cleanliness, orderly work environment, respectful consideration of others, proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, and general common sense concerning self-preservation.
It is required that students enrolled in advanced printmaking keep an active sketchbook or journal.
Attendance:
Regular, timely attendance is mandatory for success in the course. You must spend a good deal of time in the print lab in order to sufficiently work with the processes inherent in printmaking. Therefore, missing class reduces your grade as follows: 3 absences= 1 letter grade reduction, 6 absences=2 letter grade reduction, and so on. Tardiness is also penalized in the following manner: 6 tardies=1 letter grade reduction, 12 tardies=2 letter grade reduction, and so on.
*If you fall ill or have a reason to declare an absence as excused; call the University Student Center to have it resolved and they will document the event.
Procedures in the Studio:
Advanced students are required to assist beginning students and work collaboratively with one another in order to achieve the greatest possible learning experience. Peer teaching is encouraged in my studio, and that requires that you learn technical, maintenance, and safety procedures proficiently. Advanced students are also expected to be active in demonstrations to beginning students, hosting guest artists, and setting up exhibitions.
Course Project Outline: 2400 points possible
Etching Series
a. 2 small print editions employing at least two combined etching techniques.------100
b. 1 large print edition employing multiple run registration, three combined techniques and at least 2 plates. 1 black and white proof
and 1 color edition of 5 prints.-----200
Lithography Edition
1 large print edition incorporating either plate or stone lithography containing at least 10 prints pulled with either black ink with hand colored elements or an edition of 10 color prints. Techniques employed should include both drawing and wash. Advanced techniques like reversals, photo-transfer, and relief stamped autographic ink are encouraged in addition.-----300
Relief Series
1 print edition of 5 prints in full color incorporating color reduction techniques in printing a hand cut woodcut block. Contemporary Relief artists like Tom Huck and traditional artists like Hokusai will be presented in the context of this project.-----200
Simple combination print edition
1 print edition of 3 prints incorporating color. Students must choose at least two techniques to combine from previously learned media: Etching, Lithography, or Relief.-----300
Midterm Portfolio Review and Exhibition
Students will compile all editions from the beginning quarter and present them in an orderly manner for class critique. One print should be selected for exhibition presentation. Portfolio management----100
Hand-cut stencil print
1 Small print edition of 5 prints incorporating at least 3 stencils and involving at least two colors. The edition will be printed on paper and then applied to a collaborative mural project emulating street art printmaking. The works of Shepard Fairy, Banksy, and Swoon among others will be presented and studied.-----100
Serigraphy Edition
1 Large print edition of 10 incorporating color printing and employing color reduction hand filling and cut film procedures. Students will build on previous knowledge of stenciling with this project. Prints will be pulled with the previously learned concept of color reduction. The works of Rauschenberg and Warhol will be presented and discussed within the context of lecture on this project.-----200
Technical Study problem
In this assignment, students will choose a printmaking medium to study and create a technical writing manual and a print edition showcasing the medium and its capacities. Students can choose from a list of printmaking media, or choose a previous medium and refine, expand, or experiment with its capabilities.-----300
Collaborative Print Edition Exchange
Students will be given a conceptual theme to develop as a thematic problem to be solved. All students enrolled in the class and I will develop a print edition specific to the enrollment and exchange prints upon presentation. Students will be additionally challenged to develop an interesting portfolio that will be constructed to contain these prints. We will look at many examples of creative packaging designs in order to stimulate ideas about this.-----300
Artist Study paper and presentation
Students will select a contemporary or older well established practitioner of the Printmaking medium and produce a paper concerning an important body of their work. This assignment will be introduced right after midterm and ongoing research will be expected on this project as it will be due the last week of class. Students will provide a presentation to the class in a preferred format involving significant imagery, stylistic influences, affiliations with other artists or movements, and cited sources. -------200
Final Portfolio Review and Exhibition
All editions executed in the final quarter will be presented in an organized portfolio and students will participate in a critique of their body of work in the class. Students will be expected to prepare at least two prints for exhibition from this portfolio. Students will install their work and a final critique in gallery will culminate the course. Late work will not be accepted for a full grade and will result in a reduction of one letter grade for each day it is delinquent.
